How to stay fit during lockdown
Getting through lockdown has definitely been a challenge to say the least. It can feel like every day is groundhog day, and finding the motivation can be tough during periods like this. What we do know is exercise has been scientifically proven to improve mood and of course get you fit and keep you looking good. With all this in mind it’s important to keep up a few exercises each day to get you through a tough lockdown.
I recently had the experience of spending two weeks in isolation because I was a close contact in a restaurant I went to. It was tough not being able to do the simple things like go for a walk, pick up a coffee, or get groceries, but most of all it was hard not being able to do my normal outdoor exercising.
Having been in the fitness industry my whole life, I have always had access to gym equipment so not having anything to use made me become creative with what we have in our house, and I have to say it’s amazing how much you can do without any equipment.
Here are a few things I made use of which helped keep me fit during isolation.
- 1. 3L plastic milk bottle – This is a great substitute for a 3kg weight and it has a handle so it’s comfortable to use. If you want to make it heavier you can fill it with sand.
- 2. Stairs – These are great to use to get your cardio up, or if you want to strengthen your legs you can do step-ups pressing up through your heel. It is a good way to build muscle in your legs. Try putting on some fun music and do 30 minutes of step-ups each day to burn extra calories.
- 3. Plastic plates – These are great to use on carpet when you want to work that little bit harder. You can lunge with them, you can plank with them, and you can stretch with them. So don’t throw out your plastic plates!
