Partnering to keep women and children safe

City West Housing was delighted to welcome Women’s Community Shelters CEO Annabelle Daniel OAM to address staff at our End-of-year Update last week.

Women’s Community Shelters has been our partner in providing safe, transitional housing to women escaping domestic and family violence at Abbie House, a property made vacant with the departure of overseas students during the COVID pandemic. Scape Australia and the City of Sydney are also partners in the initiative.

Annabelle told the extraordinary story of how Women’s Community Shelters began in 2011 on the Northern Beaches to address a dire local need, with a new way of looking at a problem, engaging a group of passionate people and with no government funding.

Women’s Community Shelters now runs nine emergency housing shelters across NSW and works with partners like City West Housing and local communities to meet local need and increase its impact.

City West Housing CEO Leonie King said, “The whole is much more than the sum of the parts when it comes to partnerships to keep women safe. By working with Women’s Community Shelters, we have been able to house women leaving the shelter who might otherwise risk going back into unsafe home environments or homelessness.”
