Domestic and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and their children in Australia today, with an average of one woman a week being murdered. Often limited availability of affordable and secure housing shackles women in unsafe environments.

Today we shine the spotlight and raise awareness for family violence and violence against women in Australia, however, domestic violence is a reality for millions of people that extends far beyond one day.

City West Housing’s latest data indicates over 3% of current residents sort out affordable housing to escape domestic violence, however, current Australian statistics indicate that the amount who have been affected could be much higher.

City West Housing holds a Pink Ribbon Breakfast in Support of Breast Cancer Network Australia

On October 18th City West Housing staff came together to support Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) by holding a Pink Ribbon Breakfast.  Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in woman, and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed before they turn 85.

This ‘Pinktober’ is especially poignant for CWH as one of our own, René was diagnosed in February of this year.  René had no family history of breast cancer and no noticeable symptoms.

City West Housing partners with International Association for Public Participation

City West Housing is supporting the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) call to the United Nations to create an International Year of Engagement towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development and its framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in building more inclusive and engaging societies. CWH supports the call to help build awareness and focus attention on other aspects of an enabling environment, build capacity for engagement, and help support the achievement of the SDGs. CWH will be included as a supporting organisation in the IAP2 proposal to the United Nations calling for An International Year of Engagement.

We are delighted that Lisa Sorrentino is joining our team in Pyrmont as Head of Development this week helping us to continue making affordable housing for people on very low to moderate incomes a reality in Sydney. Prior to joining City West Housing Lisa worked on urban renewal projects at Urban Growth NSW and also previously worked at Stockland in apartment delivery and business development.
